Create an Environment for Learning

Where you learn, the sounds and visual space around you, the interruptions that occur, the quality of your media and tools all affect how easy or difficult it will be to concentrate and get benefits from your learning time, energy, and money.

Be intentional about your surroundings (if you can)

How you imagine the future is a major factor in your learning energy and success.

  • Remind yourself about what you want to do, be, create for yourself as a result of this learning initiative
  • Be sure you have a completed Future Card (in Tools) to guide your entire project. See the Tip, Imagine Your Desired Future
  • Create a place and format for taking notes and jotting your thoughts. Consider recording thoughts in SMART Notes (in Tools) or setting up your own notes/journal section in your SMART Phone, computer or personal notebook.
  • Set up a quiet place to do the mental heavy lifting for your project – to do “study” learning (reading, online course, podcasts, etc.)
  • Create a file or place for your learning materials and notes
  • Make a list of the forces in and around you that will help or make learning difficult. Decide how to strengthen the forces “for” and remove or deal with the forces “against” success.
  • Tell one or two people you respect about your learning intentions and plan to talk with them -- on a schedule – about your progress
  • Make sure this SMART Inside App is available to help you while you learn.
