Make Learning Moments Count

Opportunities to learn abound in everyday life. Take advantage of them. Here are some simple steps that will make you a more powerful lifelong learner just by paying attention!

Imagine that you are an expert at detecting the slightest signals that a learning opportunity is presenting itself. Imagine that you can tune in to these very faint callings, that you are better able to…

  • Tune INWARD (to your dreams, discomforts, repetitive concerns, needs, aspirations)
  • Tune OUTWARD (to projects, events around you, meetings, conversations, reports and other reading materials, presentations, and more, team activities, and more)
  • Tune FORWARD (to company strategies, industry projections, insights about an upcoming life stage, information on trends, etc.)
  • Tune BACK (to completed projects or tasks, a memory that produces regret or excitement, etc.)
  • Tune WONDER (to be more spontaneously curious or interested in something that that comes to mind for any reason)

2. Make your curiosity conscious and deliberate: Say, “I wonder what this is, means, or is saying to me!?”

  • If reading, read what is interesting – wherever it is (you don’t have read pages in order unless it is fiction!)
  • If in a conversation or meeting, ask questions to help you understand. Avoid defending or counter-arguing.
  • If in any other situation, keep alert for what is true and useful.

4. Imagine yourself using this information in the future.

5. Jot down anything you may want to remember or act on. Consider using your SMART Inside Journal – in Tools

6. Review your insights before you go to sleep; tell your brain to store them in your memory while you sleep.
