Start with Questions

Tell yourself this before you start looking for learning resources and experiences : “I am open to all new ideas that relate to my topic or learning goal.”

Here are some examples of the wondering that can launch you on a search for resources:

  • What are the best methods for….? What are the best ways to sell a service?... What are the best ways of developing strategies for a large, fast-changing enterprise? ….What are the best program for learning about financial control?

Take some time to think about what you want to discover?

Develop questions that will help you discover what more experienced people or experts think are the knowledge, skills, attitudes you need to develop or strengthen in your chosen area. Ask questions like:

  • I want to create a future where I (insert parts of your future vision). What should I know and be able to do in order to make this happen?
  • Looking to the future, what will it take to be successful at (insert what you want to be able to do)? What are the trends, technologies and more, that may affect what I should learn?

Ask questions to help you find the best resources and experiences

  • What learning resources or experiences can help me develop my knowledge and skills to (insert what you want to be able to do/be)?
  • What resources and experiences can help me get to my learning destination? Who should I contact, network with, know about?
  • What are the best resources for staying up to date and continuing to develop yourself in (insert your learning topic)?
  • I’m looking for resources to help me..….

Ask questions for general advice

  • Start with broad questions so that you won’t miss resources that are relevant but you may not initially know to ask for. (As you learn you will refine and even change your definition of what you need).
  • Continually refine your questions. Sometimes it takes a series of questions that go deeper. Also ask, “what else would you recommend?”
